WI Gala & Conference – St David’s Hall, Cardiff
100 Years of the Women’s Institute
I was invited to photograph the Gala performance at St David’s Hall in Cardiff followed by a Conference the following day.
Over 600 WI members gathered in Cardiff at the weekend for the NFWI-Wales Gala Concert and the 91st Annual Wales Conference.
The Gala concert was expertly compered by Beverley Humphreys with humour in abundance. Members were entertained by tenor soloist Rhys Meirion, harpist Catrin Finch, soprano soloist Elin Manahan Thomas and the Bone Appétit Trombone Quartet from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
During the morning of the Conference, members were addressed by NFWI-Wales Chair Ann Jones, NFWI Chair Janice Langley and Marylyn Haines Evans, NFWI Vice-Chair and Chair of the Public Affairs Committee. The afternoon guest speakers included author and historian Tessa Dunlop and the actress, singer and presenter Connie Fisher. Tessa shared with delegates stories of the incredible veterans she had interviewed for her book The Bletchley Girls and Connie spoke of her journey since winning the BBC competition ‘How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?’
There was also a display of 13 craft panels from WI groups across Wales each focusing on a decade in the history of the organisation. The fine needlework work and design ideas that had gone into each of them was wonderful to see at first hand.
